During the time when I was studying under Mick Demopolous of Chucklehead trying to learn the mechanics of slap bass and just playing in general, I remember seeing a bass stripped of hardware hanging on his wall. It didn’t have all the glossy finish as the Sukops he actively played, but it was still a work of art.
Sometime later he re-outfitted it with standard hardware and offered it to me for what I thought was a pittance. So naturally I bought it. It was a beautiful instrument in and out, with amazing action and tone. Unsure what the body was made of but it definitely had a wenge fingerboard. Two Bartolini soap dish pickups provided all the thump anyone needed.
The neck was considerably wider than my Epiphone Expert (which I promptly sold when buying this).
Only time it ever was played publicly was when I subbed in for Fathouse/Equitone at a BU Orientation event. Great fun.
Unfortunately I was hard up for $$ and sold it on e(vil)Bay, after offering it on consignment at a Boston music store (where Mick happened by and saw it).
Years later, thanks to Facebook, I connected with Stephen J Sukop and posted a pic of it. The current owner happened to see it and reached out, potentially, to sell it back to me…..at a significant premium. Sadly it was not to be.
Later owner pics proving it was the same instrument
