2002 was not a good year for the home. Lots of upheaval, drama, and general unpleasantness….which was assuaged with retail therapy. In one month, both a car and this gem of a guitar were purchased.
While we don’t know if it still the case, NEFFA used to allow for vendors at their festival, and that year in a small bit of self-torture the home was there, and spent a good several hours playing the demo models handmade by Rick Davis, formerly of Vermont, now of the Pacific northwest. We settled on the mini-jumbo with the florentine cutaway because while relative modest in profile, it sounded amazing.
It is Sitka spruce soundboard, PA cherry back and sides. Maple binding . Ebony fingerboard and bridge. The headstock is cherry ; neck mahogany.
A few years later we got into a bind and had to sell it. The whole experience felt like a drug deal as we’re sitting in Boston’s Downtown Crossing, and he pays in cash. The buyer then proceeded to disassemble the guitar and try to “fix” it, sadly making it worthless. We did try to reacquire it some years back, but the buyer wanted what he paid for it, and with the guitar essentially in pieces, it was not pursued.
